Nobuyoshi Araki's "The Works of Nobuyoshi Araki 6: Tokyo Novel" is one volume of a 20-volume complete collection of photographs, compiling images taken over approximately 30 years with the city of Tokyo as its stage. It includes a diverse range of photographs, from early works shot in Ginza and other locations during his time at Dentsu in the 1960s-70s, to candid shots taken while walking the city with a Pentax 6x7 after leaving Dentsu, and even works related to the 1992 "Jijo Choshu (Interrogation)" exhibition.

The composition, juxtaposing fragments of the city, customs, events, and personal experiences in chronological order, layers urban memories and time, emerging as a "private novel" in book form. The fragmentary yet continuous images vividly convey the reality of Tokyo as filtered through Araki's own gaze and body, expanding the possibilities of photographic narrative.

The volume includes a critique by Arata Isozaki titled "A Shaman Narrating a Novel to Himself" and the artist's own texts. This book condenses Nobuyoshi Araki's methodology of documenting the relationship between the city and the individual through photography.

Nobuyoshi Araki (Araki Nobuyoshi) 1940-

Born on May 25, 1940, in Minowa, Taito-ku, Tokyo.
In 1959, he enrolled in the Department of Photography and Printing Engineering at Chiba University's Faculty of Engineering, graduating in 1963. After graduation, he joined Dentsu and worked as an advertising photographer. In 1964, he received the 1st Taiyo Award for "Sacchan," establishing his presence as a photographer.

In 1971, he published "Sentimental Journey," a self-published photobook documenting his honeymoon with his colleague Yoko Aoki, establishing the "I-photography" style. In 1972, he left Dentsu to become a freelance photographer, shooting a wide variety of subjects including nudes, cityscapes, flowers, his beloved cat Chiro, daily life with his wife Yoko, and street snaps. His style, which emphasized fragments of daily life and personal emotions, created a new trend in the world of photography.

From the 1980s onward, he developed densely packed everyday photographs using medium format cameras such as the Pentax 67 and Plaubel Makina 67, as well as Leica. With an intimate gaze at his subjects and a moist depiction, he pursued expressions that blurred the boundaries between private and public spaces. He has published over 500 photobooks and is highly regarded both domestically and internationally.

His major photobooks include "Sentimental Journey" (1971), "Tokyo Lucky Hole" (1977), "Shakyo Rojin A" (1990), "Shashin Shijo Shugi" (2000), and "The Works of Nobuyoshi Araki" (2008).

His awards include the Taiyo Award, the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art, the 6th Ango Award, and the 54th Mainichi Art Award Special Prize. He continues to actively photograph and is globally recognized as one of Japan's leading contemporary photographers.
