Eric Carle (1929-2021)

Born in New York, USA, in 1929. Picture book author and illustrator. After spending his early childhood in America, he moved to Germany with his family at the age of six. He studied graphic design at the State Academy of Art in Stuttgart, then moved back to the United States in 1952, working as a designer and art director.

In 1967, he ventured into picture book creation by illustrating Bill Martin Jr.'s text for Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? The following year, he published his self-authored picture book 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo, and gained global recognition with The Very Hungry Caterpillar, published in 1969. He created approximately 90 picture books throughout his life, characterized by vibrant colors, unique collage techniques, and interactive book designs.

His works have been translated into over 80 languages and are beloved by children worldwide. In 2002, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art opened in Amherst, Massachusetts. He received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award in 2003. He passed away in 2021 at the age of 91.
