Haruto Hoshi's first photobook, "Luminance of Street." This book captures the human presence and impulses drifting through the night streets, weaving a vivid narrative in monochrome.
Even before he picked up a camera, Hoshi was drawn to wandering the night streets. For him, this time was a place where he confronted "loneliness," but also where his imagination and desires were unleashed. After leaving Yokohama in his early twenties and experiencing an unstable life, including working nights in a rural area, he became devoted to photography in his mid-twenties. He studied at the Modern Photography Institute and began working as a freelancer after 2000. This book can be considered an early culmination of his experiences, an extension of that journey.
The included works were primarily shot in Shinjuku's Kabukicho, as well as in "night streets" like Yokohama and Kamagasaki. Although he obtained permission from his subjects, the images exude the spontaneity and tension of snapshots. A delicate gaze is hidden within seemingly haphazard compositions, where violence, humor, and humanity intertwine. What emerges is not an observation from an outsider, but a feeling closer to "loneliness" and "solidarity" that can only be shared by someone who has been in the same place.
The figures emerging from the light and shadow of the night transcend mere documentation, subtly revealing unseen relationships and inner worlds. The continuous stream of images, developed not by leaning on nostalgia but by connecting with personal memories and desires, carries a quiet hint of "love."
