The third volume in Jun Abe's "Black & White Note" series. This photobook reselects photographs from a vast collection of contact sheets taken in the 1980s and 1990s, reconstructing them into new relationships.
For many years, Jun Abe has continuously walked the streets, mainly in Osaka, pursuing the possibilities of street snapshots. In this book, he deliberately dismantles classification by shooting era, location, or theme, selecting photos by alternating between one bundle from 80s contact sheets and one from 90s contact sheets. Liberated from their original context, the photographs create new resonances that transcend time and place.
As Abe himself states, "My rigid ideas about photography largely dissolved," this book is filled with the freedom and joy of juxtaposing photographs. While being snapshots, it transcends narratives and records, highlighting the light buoyancy and visual interest inherent in photography itself.
Jun Abe has inherited the lineage of Kansai photography while pioneering his own unique expression. This collection allows fragments of street corners to quietly resonate, reminding us of the sheer joy of looking at photographs.
