Compiled by Morioka Yoshiyuki, owner of Morioka Bookstore, this collection features 106 Japanese propaganda graphic magazines published over a period of approximately 40 years, from 1931 to 1972. The collection includes publications produced to communicate the nation's political and military policies and cultural standards overseas, as well as Western-language tourist guides, export product catalogs, exposition booklets, and Olympic-related publications. Covers and representative pages of each magazine are displayed in color. Arranged by publication year, the collection also includes information on the production background and key staff members.

The magazines included include NIPPON and FRONT . With cutting-edge printing technology as a backdrop, a diverse range of talent, including photographers, painters, and designers, contributed to the magazine's pages, making full use of photojournalism, constructive typography, and collage. The transition in content, from introducing culture to promoting national pride during wartime, reflects not only the evolution of visual expression but also the ideas and social conditions of the era.

Yoshiyuki Morioka (1974-)

Born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1974.
After working at the second-hand bookstore "Isseido Bookstore" in Jimbocho, Morioka founded Morioka Bookstore in 2006. It began as a bookstore and gallery space. In 2015, it moved to Ginza and began operating under the concept of "a bookstore that sells one book." It adopts a format where only one book is introduced and sold at each session, and has attracted attention both domestically and internationally as an attempt to create a space where dialogue can take place between authors and readers. In 2023, it was featured in "The World's Best Shops," published by London's Courier.

In addition to running the bookstore, she also assists in planning and curating exhibitions. She has been involved in exhibitions such as "Crafts Near Me" at the Shiseido Gallery, "Reverence and Crafts" at the Yamagata Biennale, and "Khadi: Weaving India's Tomorrow" at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, and has also been in charge of planning the exhibition "Japanese Art Books from the Saul Leiter Collection" at Shibuya Hikarie and the "Children and War" exhibition at the University of the Sacred Heart, Japan. Her activities span multiple fields.

He continues to write, writing serials for publications such as Geijutsu Shincho, Kogei Seika online, Hanatsubaki online, and Shosetsumaru. His works include Photo Book: 108 Books You'll Want to Give to Someone, BOOKS ON JAPAN 1931-1972: Japan's Foreign Propaganda Graphic Magazine, A Used Bookstore in the Wilderness, Books and the Shopkeeper, A Journey Around Ginza in 800 Days, and Forgiving Shortcake. In 2023, he gave a congratulatory speech as a graduating representative at the entrance ceremony of his alma mater, Hosei University.
