Daido hysteric No.6 1994 TOKYO by DAIDO MORIYAMA by Daido Moriyama is the sixth volume in the “hysteric” photo book series published by the fashion brand HYSTERIC GLAMOUR.
This book features 177 monochrome photographs presented in a large format, with “Tokyo” as its central theme. Moriyama’s characteristic motifs—city streets, signboards, people, reflections of light, and fragmented landscapes—are presented in a continuous sequence with rough grain and strong contrast, transforming Tokyo into a gigantic visual apparatus. A distinctive feature of this book is how the large format and substantial binding maintain the spontaneity of the snapshots while presenting each image with a strong materiality. Art direction was handled by Osamu Wataya and Toshio Shirotani.

Daido Moriyama (1938-)
Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1938, Daido Moriyama is a leading Japanese photographer.
He gained experience under Takeji Iwamiya and Eikoh Hosoe, then went independent in 1964.
In 1967, he received the New Artist Award from the Japan Photo Critics Association for his "Nippon Gekijo" series. The following year, he joined the photography collective "Provoke." His bold expression, characterized by high contrast, coarse grain, and blur, was dubbed "are, bure, boke" (rough, blurred, out-of-focus), significantly redefining post-war Japanese photographic expression.
Using Shinjuku, Osaka, Yokosuka, and urban landscapes from his travels as his stage, he consistently photographs a world where street fragments, the presence of people, and intertwined desires and loneliness collide. His representative works include Nippon Gekijo Shashincho, Kariudo, Shashin yo Sayonara, Hikari to Kage, and Inu no Kioku. He has established his unique world through an extensive body of published works, considering the photobook itself a crucial medium for expression.
Highly acclaimed both in Japan and internationally, he has held major solo exhibitions at institutions such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, and the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.
He received the ICP Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2012, the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (French Order of Arts and Letters) in 2018, the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography in 2019, and the Asahi Prize in 2020.
He continues to be active at the forefront of the photography world.
