"White Night" is the first collection of works by Chinese photographer Feng Li. It compiles color street snaps taken as his life's work from 2005 to 2015 and was published by Jiazazhi Press in 2017. The first edition, limited to 1000 copies, is considered an important work that brought the artist international recognition.

Feng Li, who continued to take photos while working as a civil servant, is also known by the name "Free Pig." He has established a unique style of capturing inexplicable and humorous moments encountered in the city with intense flash. The images in this book, while fragments of everyday life, possess an unusual sensation that somehow deviates from reality.

The title "White Night" is derived from a passage in the Bible, suggesting a worldview where day and night, visible and invisible, are inverted. His gaze, which brings to light the discomfort and absurdity hidden in the city during broad daylight as if it were the darkness of night, is thrown at the viewer as a "question" that resists explanation. As Feng Li himself states, this work does not offer clear answers but is also a device that constantly evokes questions in the viewer.

A silent moment in the city ripped apart by flash, and the strange bodies and relationships that appear within it—this series of images transcends the urban landscape of modern China and shakes our very perception of reality. It is highly regarded as a book that has opened up new horizons in color street photography.

Feng Li (born 1971)

Born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, in 1971. Photographer.
After studying Chinese medicine, he began self-taught photography around 1996. While working for the Sichuan Provincial Communication Bureau as a civil servant, engaged in photography related to technology development and urban infrastructure, he continued his personal creative work.

Around 2005, he officially launched "White Night," a series of color street snaps set in the urban space of Chengdu. He established a unique style of using strong flash to capture accidental, uncomfortable, humorous, and inexplicable moments hidden in everyday life. His perspective is characterized by seeing people and events that appear on the street as a "stage" where reality and fiction intersect.

In 2017, his first photo collection compiling this series, "White Night," was published and gained international attention. Since then, he has received numerous awards, including the Discovery Award at the Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival (2017), the Jinan International Photo Biennale Best Photographer Prize (2012), and the Lianzhou Photo Festival Grand Jury Prize (2012).

He has also participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at Les Rencontres d'Arles (2018) and museums and galleries in various countries, expanding his activities internationally. His photography presents a new visual language for the urban image of contemporary China.
