A book that symbolizes the "heavy-duty" culture in 1970s Japan.

Yasuhiko Kobayashi, who worked as an illustrator and essayist, introduced outdoor wear and gear, and the ideas and lifestyles behind them, based on his real-life experiences in the mountains and overseas. It was an extremely progressive work for its time, going beyond mere equipment explanations to present a sense of "how to live."

Backpacking, down, 60/40 cloth, boots, knives, log cabins, daypacks—it developed the "heavy-duty" values, influenced by the American West Coast and outdoor culture while also connected to urban life, with abundant illustrations, diagrams, and photographs.

It anticipated the sensibilities of later outdoor fashion, select shop culture, and even current lifestyle magazines, and is known as an important document for outdoor/Ivy culture in Japan.

It is a book about tools, but also a book about living.

Yasuhiko Kobayashi (1935-2020)

Born in Tokyo in 1935. Illustrator, essayist.

Active mainly in magazines and books from the 1960s to 1970s, he introduced overseas culture, outdoor activities, Ivy fashion, and travel culture from his unique perspective. His lighthearted writing and precise illustrations greatly influenced youth culture and lifestyle formation at the time.

He is particularly known for introducing the concept of "heavy-duty" to Japan, and his book "Heavy Duty no Hon" is a representative work symbolizing this philosophy. It presented values as a lifestyle including clothing, food, and housing, rather than just an outdoor hobby.

With an interest in American West Coast culture, backpacking culture, and craft-oriented approaches, he left a significant impact on Japan's outdoor culture and select shop culture.
