"Record Collection: Landscapes with Hanako: Revisiting Images" is a book born from the accumulation of records and memories surrounding Hanako, an Asian elephant who was beloved for many years at Inokashira Park Zoo in Tokyo before passing away in 2016. With the cooperation of local residents providing photographs, as well as a variety of "small records" such as text and records of care, the time spent with this elephant is quietly rewoven.

The great appeal of this book lies in the ingenious binding, with the pasted and inserted photographs. Each and every photograph provided has been treated with care, and as you turn the pages, you can feel the warmth of a handmade record notebook. It is as if the warmth and feelings of each contributor have been bound into the book, and the desire to never forget "Hanako" emerges from the binding itself.

Even readers who are unfamiliar with Hanako will find themselves overcome with the sensation of reliving childhood memories of the zoo and the feeling of a distant time as they read through this book. Though not spoken of loudly, it remains deep and lasting in the mind. This is a hidden gem that is both a collection of records and a gently awakening of memories.

AHA! (Archive for Human Activities)

An archive project that focuses on the value inherent in "small records" made by ordinary people, such as 8mm film, photographs, letters, and family albums.
It was founded in Osaka in 2005 as a subsidiary of the NPO organization [remo] for recording, expression and media.

Starting from "records and memories of the self," he continues to question how images function across time and space, and works in collaboration with civic groups, universities, art museums, and others across the country to create a variety of media, including exhibitions, publications, and web archives.

Notable examples of her work include the planning and editing of the record collection Landscapes with Hanako: (Re)Purchasing Images (Musashino City Kichijoji Museum of Art, 2017) and the website Setagaya Chronicle 1936–83 (Seikatsu Kobo, 2019). In 2022, she also launched a publishing label, and, under the guiding principle of “Celebrating the birthday of small records,” she continues to attempt to create spaces throughout society where “my” perspective emerges from “someone’s” records.
