"Nerhol: Turning the Leaves of Horizons" is an exhibition catalog documenting the first large-scale museum solo exhibition by the artist duo Nerhol. It was published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name held at the Chiba City Museum of Art in 2024.

Formed in 2007 by graphic designer Yoshihisa Tanaka and sculptor Ryuta Iida, Nerhol has pioneered a unique form of expression by traversing multiple boundaries, including photography and sculpture, two-dimensional and three-dimensional, and documentation and time. This book features representative works, from those depicting people, plants, street trees, naturalized plants, and petrified wood, to their latest creations. It showcases a collection of images that embody traces of time, revealed by stacking sequential photographs and sculpturally carving them.

At the exhibition, installations such as "Conceal with Oga Lotus," which used washi paper embedded with Oga Lotus from Chiba Park, and collaborative exhibits with the Chiba City Museum of Art collection garnered significant attention.

The catalog includes an essay by Keisuke Mori titled "Turning the Horizon: The World Nerhol Opens and Covers," and "Coexisting Works: Getting to Know Nerhol Through the 'Coexistence' Exhibition" by Masato Shoji. It also features installation views, a list of works, and artist biographies, offering a multifaceted exploration of Nerhol's ideas and practices.

Nerhol

Nerhol is an artist duo formed in 2007 by graphic designer Yoshihisa Tanaka and sculptor Ryuta Iida. The unit's name derives from Tanaka's role of "neru" (developing ideas) and Iida's role of "horu" (carving).

Yoshihisa Tanaka was born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1980. In 2004, he graduated from Musashino Art University with a degree in Spatial Presentation Design. Ryuta Iida was born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1981. After graduating from Nihon University College of Art with a degree in Sculpture, he completed his master's degree in Advanced Art Expression at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2014.

Known for their unique expression that transcends photography and sculpture, design and contemporary art, they create works that visualize layers of time and memory using materials such as people, plants, street trees, water, archival footage, and images from the internet. Since around 2011, they have developed a series of works in which they sculpturally carve stacks of photographs of the same subject taken in succession, exploring the fluctuations of time inherent in the subject and the cycle of consumption, production, and oblivion in modern society.

In 2013, they received the "Bacon Prize." In 2020, they won the VOCA Prize at the "VOCA Exhibition 2020" for "Remove." Their major solo exhibitions include "Index" (Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, 2015), "Promenade" (21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, 2016), "Interview, Portrait, House and Room" (Youngun Museum / Korea, 2017), and "Turning the Leaves of Horizons" (Chiba City Museum of Art, 2024). Their works are housed in institutions such as Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam and the amana collection.
