A photography magazine by the independent photo gallery PUT, which was active in Shinjuku in the late 1970s. Published by PUT Publishing Bureau in 1979, it is the only publication left by the gallery.
Photo Gallery PUT was an independently run gallery established in 1976, primarily by graduates of Shomei Tomatsu's class at Workshop Photography School. Unlike manufacturer-affiliated or commercial galleries, it served as a platform for photographers to showcase their own work, playing a significant role in Tokyo's photography scene in the late 70s.
This issue features works by Noboru Hama, Tsunetoshi Osafune, Hiroshi Sumitomo, Yoshimasa Taguchi, Shingo Noda, and Tomoyuki Oka. It is said to have been published on the occasion of a special exhibition by these six artists: Tomoyuki Oka and Noboru Hama from PUT, Yoshimasa Taguchi and Hiroshi Sumitomo who also had solo exhibitions at Prism and Owl, Tsunetoshi Osafune who was involved with GIG in Shizuoka, and Shingo Noda who was involved in serious photography.
It is a collection of works, a record, and a small statement by photographers, responding to the political era and calling for future photographic expression. It is also an interesting document for understanding the independent gallery movement of the late 1970s, alongside CAMP, Prism, and Connect In.
