Kishin Shinoyama (1940-2024)

Born on December 3, 1940 in Kashiwagi, Yodobashi Ward, Tokyo City, Tokyo Prefecture (now Kita-Shinjuku, Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo).
His real name is Kishin Shinoyama (Michinobu).
He died of old age in Tokyo on January 4, 2024 (aged 83).

He distinguished himself while studying photography at Nihon University College of Art, and won the Japan Advertising Photographers Association (APA) Award in 1961. In 1968, he left the advertising production company Light Publicity to become independent as a freelancer. In 1966, he was the youngest artist selected for the "Ten Contemporary Photographers" exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and in 1976 he was selected to represent Japan at the Venice Biennale.

Since the 1970s, he has made a name for himself with his "Gekisha" series. He has photographed Momoe Yamaguchi, Akina Nakamori, and others, and has produced many portraits that symbolize the era. In 1991, he published Kanako Higuchi's "Water Fruit" and Rie Miyazawa's "Santa Fe," sparking a boom that became a social phenomenon. He is also known for photographing the cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's album "Double Fantasy."

His representative works include "House" (1975), "Sunny Day" (1975), "TOKYO NUDE" (1990), "Santa Fe" (1991), and many others. His large-scale solo exhibition "The Power of Photography," which began in 2012, toured the country and attracted more than one million visitors.

His major awards include the Japan Photo Critics Association Newcomer Award (1966), the Photographic Society of Japan Annual Award (1970), the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists (1972), the Mainichi Art Award (1979), the International Photography Festival Gold Award (1998), and the Kikuchi Kan Award (2020).

He has worked across a wide range of genres, from nudes and idols to kabuki, architecture and urban landscapes, and is regarded as one of the most influential photographers in the history of Japanese photography.
