Kishin Shinoyama (1940–2024)

Born on December 3, 1940, in Kashiwagi, Yodobashi-ku, Tokyo City, Tokyo Prefecture (now Kitashinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo).
Real name: Michinobu Shinoyama.
Passed away on January 4, 2024, in Tokyo due to old age (83 years old).

He showed early promise while studying photography at Nihon University College of Art, winning the Japan Advertising Photographers' Association Award (APA Award) in 1961. In 1968, he left the advertising production company Light Publicity to become a freelance photographer. In 1966, he was the youngest photographer selected for the "Ten Contemporary Photographers" exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and in 1976, he was chosen as the representative artist for the Japan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

From the 1970s onwards, he achieved widespread popularity with his "Gekisha" series. He photographed Momoe Yamaguchi, Akina Nakamori, and many others, publishing numerous iconic portraits of the era. In 1991, his publications of Kanako Higuchi's "Water Fruit" and Rie Miyazawa's "Santa Fe" caused a social phenomenon. He is also known for photographing the album cover for John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Double Fantasy."

His representative works include "Ie" (1975), "Hareta Hi" (1975), "TOKYO NUDE" (1990), and "Santa Fe" (1991), among many others. His large-scale solo exhibition "Shashinryoku," which began in 2012, toured nationwide and attracted over 1 million visitors.

His major awards include the Newcomer's Award from the Japan Photo Critics Association (1966), the Photographer of the Year Award from the Photographic Society of Japan (1970), the New Artist's Award from the Minister of Education, Science and Culture (1972), the Mainichi Art Award (1979), the Gold Award at the International Photography Festival (1998), and the Kikuchi Kan Prize (2020).

Crossing a wide range of genres, from nudes and idols to kabuki, architecture, and urban landscapes, he is regarded as one of the photographers with the greatest popular influence in the history of Japanese photography.
