The collection of works A Life with Camera YOSHIHIKO UEDA by Yoshihiko Ueda compiles over 30 years of his career since his debut in 1982, spanning across advertising, portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and snapshots. This nearly 600-page book contains works selected, arranged, and composed by the artist himself from his vast print archive, allowing readers to trace the changes and continuities in Yoshihiko Ueda's perspective.

The included works begin with black-and-white portraits of Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe taken in the 1980s, followed by color works of Patti Smith and Ray Charles, and then portraits of Yu Aoi, Kirin Kiki, Takuya Kimura, and Takeshi Kitano. The latter half of the book includes representative series such as Flowers, Materia, and River, creating a structure where personal and commercial works naturally intersect.

What consistently stands out in Ueda's photographs is his approach of carefully capturing the light, atmosphere, and quiet presence of a place, rather than heavily directing the subject. As the introductory text states, "Photography is about perspective," the works in this book can be read not only as records of subjects but also as traces of the artist's own engagement with the world. This book serves as a valuable entry point for understanding the complete picture of photographer Yoshihiko Ueda.

Yoshihiko Ueda (born 1957)

Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1957.
One of Japan's leading photographers. After graduating from Osaka School of Photography (now Osaka Visual Arts Academy) in 1979, he studied under Masanobu Fukuda and Taiji Arita, and went independent in 1982. While making a name for himself in advertising photography, he has also produced works across a wide range of genres, including portraits, landscapes, architecture, and performing arts.

His major works include QUINAULT, which captured the sacred forests of Native Americans; AMAGATSU, which followed dancer Ushio Amagatsu; at Home, which quietly depicted the daily life of his family; Materia, which focused on the nature of Yakushima; and A Life with Camera, which compiles over 30 years of his activities. He is widely known for his photographic expressions that capture not just the surface of the subject, but also layers of light, atmosphere, and time.

He has received numerous awards, including the Tokyo ADC Award, New York ADC Award, and the Photographic Society of Japan's Artist Award. In 2011, he opened Gallery 916 in Tokyo Bay, working to disseminate photographic culture. From 2014 to 2025, he served as a professor at Tama Art University, contributing to the development of future generations. In 2021, he directed, wrote, and photographed the film "The Garden of Camellias," and continues to work across various domains of photographic expression.
